Clinicians Omega-3 Fish Oil 1000mg as the name suggests contains a blend of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D3 in the form of cholecalciferol and iodine from potassium iodide.

Omega-3 Fish Oil - works as a natural anti-inflammatory agent that also supports brain function. Inflammation is thought to be the underling factor in many chronic and degenerative diseases.

Supplementation with omega-3 has been clinically shown to reduce inflammation through its ability to inhibit cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 expression and therefore prevent elevated levels of the prostaglandin called arachidonic acid (which is an omega-6 fatty acid) in the same way that prescribed COX-2 inhibitor medications such as Celebrex and Vioxx work.1 Prostaglandins are hormone-like substances that are found in most tissues and organs that act as mediators responsible for physiological effects such as inflammation and platelet aggregation. Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids ordinarily compete at two specific prostaglandin pathways; COX and lipoxygenase (LOX).2 In the case of inflammation (when there is too much omega-6), this fatty acid dominates within the COX 2 pathway, which in turn causes elevated levels of arachidonic acid. In individuals with inflammation (as seen in osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis), omega-6 becomes proinflammatory, that is it promotes inflammation within the body when levels become elevated. Omega-3 has the opposite effect being anti-inflammatory, which is why the ratio between omega-3 and omega-6 requires balance.

Discontinue two weeks prior to elective surgery as fish oils may prolong blood clotting time.
Exercise caution in patients with hypercalcaemia and/or primary hyperparathyroidism as vitamin D supplementation may increase urinary calcium excretion. Regular monitoring of serum and urinary calcium is advised if taking supplemental vitamin D.
Exercise caution in patients with other disorders of calcium metabolism such as sarcoidosis, hypercalciuria, tuberculosis, fungal granulomas, berylliosis and lymphomas. These disorders are associated with a dysregulation in vitamin D production and additional vitamin D can raise calcium levels and increase the risk of renal stones and renal failure. Regular monitoring of serum calcium is advised if taking supplemental vitamin D.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: EFA’s are thought to be safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding when supplementing in doses typically found in foods. The recommended intake of DHA during pregnancy is 200mg per day given its role in infant neurological and cognitive development. While fish is advocated during pregnancy, potentially harmful contaminants such as dioxins, methylmercury, and polychlorinated biphenyls can be found in some species of fish and may be harmful in pregnant or nursing women. It is not thought that these safety concerns apply to supplemental EFA’s (provided they are free of, or have safe and permissible levels of such contaminants). Supplemental vitamin D during pregnancy and breast feeding is considered safe when doses do not exceed the tolerable upper intake level (50mcg or 2000IU per day).  Supplemental iodine during pregnancy and breast feeding is considered safe when doses do not exceed the tolerable upper intake level (1,100 mcg per day).
